In working on the seo for bloggers book and dealing with blogging clients, I’ve come up with a handful of things you (or your blog software) should definitely do if you want to rank well in the search engines.
These are the absolute necessities of blog optimzation.

Automatically send and receive trackbacks
Automatically ping blog services when new post is made
Maintain a blogroll
Single-post page title tags contain the post’s title
Permalink URLs contain the post title
The post title is the link to the permalink page
Post titles are wrapped in heading tags
Create multiple paths for spiders through your archives (monthly, related posts, most popular, etc)
Use categories and make them keyword-rich

I did a similar list. I used ‘optimize’ but didn’t necessarily mean ’search optimized’. Is that what you are referring to?

Well, it is since long time this blog has been posted and I have found it today. First thanks for these cool tips. Little changed between now and then. Couple of other tips, would be to focus on Micro-blogging using Twitter and participating social networking sites.

I would like to know little bit more about “Automatically send and receive trackbacks” and “Create multiple paths for spiders through your archives (monthly, related posts, most popular, etc)”. How to implement these tips. Also what would bring spiders to index all those multiple paths.

Looking forward to hear and to read more about SEO and optimization tips.
