Both title styles are effective for blog SEO. I suggest you try using both styles on your blog. Note that this post uses the keyword phrase colon phrase format.
Personally I’d go with the second title as it contains an actual keyword phrase (wordtracker says “dog food” gets 700+ searches a day).
