Viral marketing is most important in online marketing. There are many applications those can do free viral advertising for your site/blog. Downloading free tellafriend widgets like http://tellafriend.socialtwist.com/index.jsp can give you word of mouth for your site/blog.

Hi Dan,

I just discovered your blog today and being an anthropology/sociology student I am very intrigued by your postings.

I think when it comes to Twitter, precisely what has made it so popular is that there is no pressure. You don't have to say very much, you certainly don't have to say anything profound, and you don't even have to be completely articulate. And, like most online soapboxes, you don't even have to divulge your real identity. No pressure there!

One's tweets are primarily followed by friends and family so there's much more freedom to be yourself and say whatever strikes your fancy, anytime, anywhere.

This new online world we live in is extremely fascinating from a sociological and an evolutionary perspective, and I for one am very excited to see where it takes us.

Keep up the insightful posts. I'm looking forward to many more.

Thanks!

I love how you generalized viral marketing to a level that is not only historical but applicable to all humans through evolution, whether on the Internet or not.

Interesting to see later who the use of cell phones as a means of sending "chain letters" and other viral messages will make this even more prevalent, admittedly now it is absolutely real time. We are not always in front of the computer, but we do have our cell phones on most of the time.

Dan,
Nice time line through human viral communication. Another part of the oral tradition of shared communication are religious and tribal stories like the Vedas and Buddhist Sutras.

Viral Marketing when done correctly will self propigate itself. Something fun or eye-catching that draws people in without being overbearing will no doubt be spread from person to person carrying your marketing message along with it.

Viral Marketing is becoming a more popular method of marketing and something that every business, no matter how big or small, should look into as part of a new marketing campaign.

Wow - that was a fabulous breakdown of the evolution process. I wonder how many marketers understand that for the web, it isn't about "marketing" at all, but rather about what appeals to the people... the "what's in it for me" for the idea to spread.

Very, very insightful post. Viral marketing has definitely evolved over the years and will continue to. Viral marketers need to understand the underlinings and past of it to really get it today :-)
