Hiya,

Great site!

Question: How did the "freebie" sites find your post and aggregate it? Did you help in that process at all?

-Thanks, Brad

Great post - lots of valuable data there. I know sharing the specific page and tool might be a little much, so I'll ask if you could give us a general overview of the tool, without getting into specifics.

We've been looking into freebie seekers as well. Take this free ecourse as an example:

http://ReallySimpleMethod.com

It's a little story that's also a squeeze page. About 42% of the folks that view that page subscribe for the ecourse. It could be higher, and should be higher, but that's for another day.

These folks convert on the backend very poorly. That is, when we offer up new freebies, they go crazy. But, when they are offered something with a price, they hardly buy at all; sometimes below 1% conversion rates.

So, that site, as an example, is a mixed bag. We can easily grow a list with it, but the economics for "monetizing the list" are so-so at best.

There are other uses for lists like these, however. Sharp marketers know what I'm talking about. You can, for example, drive these folks to pages and ask for Diggs and Stumbles and the like.

Really great breakdown and details here.
It must have taken some time.

We've worked on something similar - but actually targeted some of the more active users (in topically related forums & communities) up front, in order to get some initial exposure and feedback (via free goods).

Getting these folks invested turned into a successful link building effort for the client. It also spread the word via communities and forums really nicely as well.
