There is also a kind of gossip, and this may be a female pattern, where individuals welcome a newcomer by telling her stories about the past behavior of others in the group - to orient her to the structure and patterns of the group and help her fit in.It is neither house-talk, scandal or bitching, although it may contain elements of those, and it's more than chatting. In some web communities, people will answer questions from "newbies" but that's not really the same as the orienting gossip, IMHO. Very interesting definitions and examples.
